Wyze Cam without Subscription: What Actually Works
We earn a commission from links on this page — it doesn't affect what we score, or how. How this works
The problem
You want a Wyze camera that actually records and lets you review footage without getting locked into a monthly Cam Plus subscription.
What’s actually going on
Wyze's free tier only sends short, motion-triggered cloud clips (about 12 seconds each) with a cooldown between events, and person/AI detection is a Cam Plus-only feature. That's the subscription gate people run into. It's not that the camera can't record without paying — it's that Wyze pushes the always-on, AI-tagged, cloud-hosted experience behind Cam Plus.
The fix
Skip the subscription and use local storage instead. Every current Wyze Cam has a microSD card slot, and once you insert a card (Wyze specifies microSDXC, up to 256GB, Class 10 or better) you can set the camera to record continuously or on-motion directly to the card — no cloud, no subscription, no clip-length cap.
In the Wyze app, go to the camera's Settings > Advanced Settings > Local Storage and choose "Continuous Recording" or "Event Recording." Footage lives on the card and is scrubbable/playable from the app over local network or remote connection, without touching Cam Plus.
What you give up without a subscription: cloud backup (so if the camera or card is stolen/damaged, that footage is gone), AI-based person/vehicle/pet detection, and longer cloud event history. If you're fine reviewing local footage after the fact rather than getting smart push alerts, local recording alone covers the core job of "camera that records when something happens."
Any of the three current Wyze Cam models works this way, since local microSD recording is a hardware/firmware feature, not a subscription tier — buy based on resolution and indoor/outdoor needs (v3 and OG for basic 1080p, v4 for 2.5K with color night vision), then just add your own microSD card.

If you already own a Wyze Cam and just want free continuous recording, you don't need to buy anything new — just add a compatible microSD card and switch on local storage in the app settings. The subscription only becomes relevant if you specifically want cloud backup or AI-tagged alerts.
