How to Know When Kid Got Home from School: What Actually Works

The problem
You want to know the moment your kid actually walks in the door after school, instead of texting them and waiting for a reply (or not getting one).
What’s actually going on
The gap isn't a hardware problem, it's a notification problem. Calling or texting relies on your kid remembering to respond, and most "trackers" people buy for this (item finders like AirTag or Tile) aren't built to push a proactive "arrived home" alert to you — they're built to help someone locate a lost object when they go looking for it, which is a different job.
The fix
If your kid carries any smartphone, you don't need to buy anything. Turn on location sharing and set up a Place Alert for home:
- On iPhone, Apple's Find My lets you share location with family and get notified when someone arrives at or leaves a saved place, with no extra hardware.
- Life360's Circles feature does the same across iPhone and Android, with a "Place Alert" that fires the second a Circle member's phone enters the geofence you draw around your house.
If your kid doesn't carry a phone, a Bluetooth tag can stand in, but only if it's paired with a service that actually does geofence alerts — the tag by itself won't notify you. Life360 (which now owns Tile) lets you add a Tile Mate (2022) or Tile Slim (2022) into a Circle and get a Place Alert when the tag crosses into your home geofence, the same way it works for a phone.
Skip Apple AirTag for this specific job. AirTag is built around Apple's Find My network and its "Notify When Found" feature, which is meant for locating a lost item when the network happens to see it near another Apple device — it isn't designed to push a proactive "they're home" alert, and it doesn't plug into Life360's Place Alert system the way a Tile does.

A few practical notes if you do go the tag route: clip it inside the backpack, not the outer pocket, so it doesn't fall out or get swapped between bags. And check battery life before committing — both Tile Mate and Tile Slim use replaceable batteries per Tile's own product documentation, while AirTag uses a user-replaceable CR2032 per Apple's support page, so neither needs to be charged like a phone.
